About Umbraco

Umbraco is an open-source content management system built on Microsoft .NET and released under the MIT licence. It is popular with agencies and organisations that already run on Microsoft technology, from mid-sized companies to universities and public bodies. Developers define document types and templates in C# and Razor, while editors get a clear backoffice with a content tree, a block-based editor, multilingual variants and scheduled publishing. The CMS follows the .NET release cadence, and the Umbraco company sells managed hosting through Umbraco Cloud, support plans, add-ons such as forms and workflow, and Heartcore, a hosted headless version. The core is free to self-host on Windows or Linux servers, including Azure. The main limits are a smaller pool of developers and packages than PHP-based CMSs, and the need for .NET skills for anything custom. Editors work in the browser.

Best for: Organisations and agencies standardised on .NET and Microsoft hosting.
