About Zazzle

Zazzle is a US online marketplace for custom and personalised products: invitations, greeting cards, business cards, wedding stationery, mugs, T-shirts, phone cases, wall art, party supplies and much more. Shoppers can buy designs made by others and edit the text or photos, or start from a blank product in Zazzle's design tool. Every item is made when it's ordered. Designers can open a free Zazzle store, upload their work onto products and set their own royalty rate; Zazzle handles printing, shipping and customer service and pays a royalty on each sale. Compared with Redbubble or Society6, Zazzle leans heavily toward personalised paper goods and events such as weddings, birthdays and holidays rather than art and apparel alone. Buying and selling are free; an optional Zazzle Plus membership gives shoppers free shipping and member offers. It runs in the browser with a companion mobile app.

Best for: Designers selling personalised stationery and gifts, and shoppers customising event items.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free store, with creators setting their own royalty rate
  • Very wide range of personalisable products, from invitations to home decor
  • Zazzle handles printing, shipping and customer service

Why people leave

  • Large catalogue makes it hard for new designs to get noticed
  • No direct relationship with buyers or access to their details
  • Frequent sitewide sales can reduce what a shopper pays and what a design earns
