Advent of Code vs LeetCode
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Advent of Code
Free annual Advent calendar of programming puzzles that you can solve in any language.

LeetCode
Coding interview practice site with thousands of algorithm problems, weekly contests and a paid Premium tier.
The short answer
Advent of Code is a free yearly event of story-driven puzzles you solve in any language on your own machine; LeetCode is a year-round interview practice site with an in-browser judge, contests and a Premium tier. Pick LeetCode for focused technical interview prep, and Advent of Code for fun seasonal practice, learning a new language or team challenges.
Advent of Code or LeetCode: our take
Both give programmers puzzles to solve, but the format and purpose differ. Advent of Code, run by Eric Wastl since 2015, unlocks one two-part puzzle a day each December. Every player gets their own input, you solve it with whatever language and tools you like locally, and you submit only the answer. Puzzles are designed to run in under 15 s on ten-year-old hardware. LeetCode hosts a large, permanent library of data structure and algorithm problems plus SQL and shell questions, each with a browser editor that runs your code against hidden test cases. Problems are tagged by topic and difficulty, and community threads collect alternative solutions.
Competition works differently. LeetCode runs weekly and biweekly contests with a public rating that tracks progress. Advent of Code removed its global leaderboard after ten years, but private leaderboards make it easy to race friends or colleagues. Advent of Code's archive stays online, so past years can be played any time, but new puzzles only arrive in December, and the site has no editor, hints or test runner.
Cost and platforms also differ. Advent of Code is free, supported by sponsors and optional AoC++ donations, and is web only. LeetCode is free for most problems and contests, while Premium, billed monthly or annually, adds locked questions, official write-ups, company-tagged questions and mock interviews; it also has iOS and Android apps.
If you have interviews coming up at tech companies, LeetCode is the more direct preparation, since its problems mirror interview questions and Premium can filter by company. If you want to practise problem solving for enjoyment, learn a new language with real puzzles, or run a team event, Advent of Code is a better fit. Plenty of developers use both: LeetCode through the year and Advent of Code each December.

About each app
What is Advent of Code?
Advent of Code is a yearly event run by Eric Wastl since 2015. Each December a new two-part programming puzzle unlocks every day, wrapped in a light story, and you solve it with whatever language and tools you like on your own computer, then submit just the answer. Each player gets their own puzzle input, and every problem is designed to run quickly even on old hardware. People use it for interview prep, learning a new language, team training or friendly races on private leaderboards; the global leaderboard was removed after ten years. Past events stay online, so you can work through the archive at any time of year. It's free to play, supported by sponsors and optional AoC++ donations. It suits programmers who enjoy puzzles; the trade-off is that it runs only once a year and offers no hints, editor or test runner on the site.
What is LeetCode?
LeetCode is the site most software engineers end up on when they start preparing for technical interviews. It hosts a large library of data structure and algorithm problems, plus SQL and shell questions, each with a browser code editor that runs your solution against hidden test cases and reports whether it passed. Problems are tagged by topic and difficulty, and community discussion threads collect alternative solutions. Weekly and biweekly contests give a rating that tracks progress over time. The free account covers most problems, contests and community solutions. Premium, sold as a monthly or annual subscription, adds locked questions, official write-ups, filtering by the companies that asked a question, mock interviews and faster judging. It runs on the web with mobile apps for reading and practising. The focus is narrow: it drills interview-style puzzles rather than teaching programming from scratch, so beginners usually pair it with a course.
