Akamai vs Google Cloud CDN
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Akamai
One of the largest CDN and edge platforms, with security services and the Akamai Cloud (Linode) compute offering.

Google Cloud CDN
Google Cloud's content delivery network that caches content on Google's global edge network.
The short answer
Akamai suits large enterprises and media companies that want a mature CDN plus security products on a negotiated contract. Google Cloud CDN suits teams already on Google Cloud that want usage-billed caching in front of their load balancer. The biggest difference is how you buy and set them up: Akamai goes through sales and Property Manager, Google Cloud CDN is a switch on a Google Cloud load balancer.
Akamai or Google Cloud CDN: our take
Akamai runs one of the oldest and largest content delivery networks and sells it alongside web application firewall, bot management and DDoS protection. Delivery is configured in Property Manager, where you set edge hostnames, caching rules and origins, and EdgeWorkers lets you run JavaScript at the edge with cold starts under 5 ms. Most products, including EdgeWorkers, are bought on contracts through sales rather than a self-serve plan, and the control panel and terminology take time to learn. The exception is Akamai Cloud, the compute platform from its Linode acquisition, which has published pay-as-you-go pricing.
Google Cloud CDN is not a standalone product: you enable it on backends behind Google Cloud's external Application Load Balancer. Those backends can be Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, GKE, Cloud Run or origins outside Google Cloud. It supports HTTP/3, QUIC, signed URLs and cache key and TTL controls, and pairs with Cloud Armor for WAF and DDoS protection. Billing is purely on usage, with cache egress from $0.08 per GiB for the first 10 TiB and lookup requests at $0.0075 per 10,000. New Google Cloud customers get $300 in credits. Large-scale video streaming needs Google's separate Media CDN product.
In practice the choice follows where your infrastructure lives and how you like to buy. If your apps and buckets already run on Google Cloud, Cloud CDN is the shortest path: no contract, a familiar console, and costs that scale with traffic. If you are a large media company, bank or retailer that needs enterprise support through huge traffic peaks, a broad security suite and edge code under a single contract, Akamai is built for that. Smaller sites outside Google Cloud will likely find both heavier than they need: Akamai because of contracts and complexity, and Cloud CDN because of the load balancer requirement.
Which should you pick?
Choose Akamai if…
- Large enterprises and media companies that need a proven CDN and security at very high scale
- Very large, mature edge network suited to huge traffic peaks
- Security products (WAF, bot management, DDoS) alongside delivery
Choose Google Cloud CDN if…
- Teams running on Google Cloud who want caching in front of their load-balanced apps and buckets
- Runs on the same global network Google uses for its own services
- Integrates with Cloud Armor for WAF and DDoS protection
About each app
What is Akamai?
Akamai runs one of the oldest and largest content delivery networks, serving websites, software downloads, video and APIs from servers spread across thousands of networks worldwide. Customers configure delivery through Property Manager, where they set edge hostnames, caching behaviour, origins and rules, and can run JavaScript at the edge with EdgeWorkers. Around the CDN it sells web application firewall, bot management and DDoS protection, which is where much of its business now sits, plus Akamai Cloud, the compute platform that grew out of its Linode acquisition. Large media companies, banks and retailers choose Akamai for its reach and enterprise support during huge traffic peaks. Most products are bought on annual contracts through sales rather than self-serve sign-up, and its control panel and terminology take time to learn. Linode-based cloud compute is the exception, with published pay-as-you-go pricing. Smaller sites usually find Cloudflare, Fastly or Bunny.net easier and cheaper to start with.
What is Google Cloud CDN?
Google Cloud CDN caches web content on Google's global edge network so that pages, images and downloads are served from a location near each visitor. It is not a standalone service in the way some CDNs are: it is switched on for backends behind Google Cloud's external Application Load Balancer, which can point at Compute Engine VMs, Cloud Storage buckets, GKE services, Cloud Run, or origins outside Google Cloud. It supports modern protocols such as HTTP/3 and QUIC, signed URLs for private content, cache key and TTL controls, and works with Cloud Armor for web application firewall and DDoS protection. Google sells a separate product, Media CDN, for large-scale video streaming and big file downloads. Cloud CDN has no monthly plan; it is billed purely on usage, mainly cache egress by volume, cache fill between regions, and lookup requests, with volume discounts at higher tiers. New Google Cloud customers get trial credits. It suits teams already running workloads on Google Cloud more than people looking for a quick drop-in CDN for any site.
