The short answer

Amazon EC2 suits teams that need a huge range of instance types, deep integration with the rest of AWS and discounts through Savings Plans or Spot. Vultr suits developers who want simple hourly VMs, bare metal or GPUs in many regions with less billing complexity. The biggest difference is scope and predictability: EC2 is one piece of a vast platform with many separately billed parts, Vultr is a simpler developer cloud.

Amazon EC2 or Vultr: our take

Amazon EC2 is the virtual server service at the heart of Amazon Web Services. You choose from a very long list of instance types, from small burstable machines to large GPU, Arm and memory-heavy servers, and combine them with separate services for block storage, load balancing, networking and auto scaling. Vultr is an independent developer cloud that rents VMs, bare-metal servers and cloud GPUs by the hour, with storage, managed databases, Kubernetes, a CDN and serverless AI inference available from the same dashboard.

Pricing is where the two feel most different. EC2 bills per second on common operating systems, and you can cut costs sharply with Savings Plans (up to 72% off On-Demand for a one- or three-year commitment) or Spot Instances (up to 90% off, but capacity can be reclaimed at short notice). New accounts get a free tier with up to $200 in credits over 6 months. The catch is that data transfer, storage and IP addresses are billed separately, so the monthly total is hard to predict; even traffic between availability zones costs $0.01/GB in each direction. Vultr's usage-based billing with no long contracts is easier to read, and it positions itself below the big three clouds on price, though it has no equivalent to Spot's deep discounts.

Both offer strong automation. EC2 sits next to S3, RDS, IAM and the rest of AWS, which matters if your system already depends on them. Vultr offers a REST API, an Apache-2.0 CLI, a Terraform provider and SDKs, plus custom ISO uploads and one-click marketplace apps. Servers on both are unmanaged: you look after updates and security.

Choose EC2 if you need specific hardware, large-scale auto scaling, enterprise controls or close ties to other AWS services, and have the skills to manage its pricing. Choose Vultr if you want straightforward VMs, GPUs or bare metal in many regions without learning a large platform.

Which should you pick?

Choose Amazon EC2 if…

  • Teams that need many instance types, regions or deep AWS integration rather than a simple VPS.
  • Huge choice of instance types, including GPUs and Arm
  • Per-second billing on common operating systems

Choose Vultr if…

  • Developers wanting hourly cloud servers or GPUs close to users in many regions
  • Wide choice of regions worldwide
  • Bare metal and cloud GPUs alongside regular VMs

About each app

What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is the core virtual server service of Amazon Web Services. You pick an instance type from a very long list, from tiny burstable machines to large GPU and memory-heavy servers, choose an operating system image, and run it in any AWS region. Networking, block storage (EBS), load balancers and auto scaling are separate services you combine around it. Billing is flexible: On-Demand instances are charged per second with no commitment, Savings Plans cut the price in exchange for a one- or three-year commitment, and Spot Instances sell spare capacity at a deep discount but can be reclaimed. A free tier lets new accounts try small instances. EC2 suits teams that need scale, specific hardware or the rest of AWS next to their servers. For a single simple VPS it is more work and harder to price than Lightsail or DigitalOcean, since bandwidth, storage and IP addresses are billed separately.

What is Vultr?

Vultr is an independent cloud provider that rents virtual machines, bare-metal servers and cloud GPUs by the hour from a large set of regions around the world. Beyond compute it offers block, object and file storage, managed databases, managed Kubernetes, load balancers, a CDN, a container registry and serverless AI inference. You can deploy from a long list of operating systems, upload your own ISO, or use one-click marketplace apps. It is aimed at developers, startups and gaming or AI teams that want a simple, global footprint at prices below the big three clouds. Everything is controllable from the web dashboard, a REST API, an official open-source CLI and a Terraform provider. Billing is usage-based with no long contracts. Like other developer clouds, servers are unmanaged by default, and support beyond the basics costs extra.
