The short answer

Angel One suits Indian investors who want research reports and stock recommendations alongside their trading app. Groww suits first-time investors who want a clean, simple app for mutual funds and stocks with no account maintenance charge. Equity brokerage is the same on both after Angel One's introductory period; the biggest differences are Angel One's research-led, full-service approach versus Groww's simplicity and wider product range, including US stocks.

Angel One or Groww: our take

Both are large Indian brokers running on Android, iOS and the web, covering stocks, futures and options, commodities, mutual funds and IPOs. Angel One, formerly Angel Broking, has more than three decades in the business and reports 3.8 crore+ registered users. It calls itself full-service: research, stock recommendations, in-app learning and a national network of authorised persons. Groww, based in Bengaluru, began with mutual funds and says it serves 50 million+ customers. It is known for a simple interface for first-time investors and also offers US stocks.

Costs are close. Account opening is ₹0 on both. Equity orders cost the lower of ₹20 or 0.1% per executed order on each, and Angel One charges ₹20 per executed F&O order. Angel One adds an introductory offer of ₹0 brokerage up to ₹500 for the first 30 days, and its maintenance charge is ₹0 only for the first year. Groww's account maintenance is ₹0 with no time limit. Both charge no commission on mutual fund investments; Angel One also charges nothing for IPO applications, and Groww's direct funds and SIPs come at zero charges. Groww lists 14.95% a year for margin trading interest.

For active traders, Groww splits advanced tools into separate products, Groww Terminal and 915, plus screeners, margin trading and an API for algorithmic trading. Angel One keeps trading inside its main app and leans on research and recommendations, which some self-directed investors find pushy. Groww runs its own mutual fund house, worth keeping in mind when browsing its fund suggestions.

Pick Angel One if you want guidance and research with your account and plan to trade actively from the start. Pick Groww if you are new to investing, want mutual funds and stocks in one uncluttered app, or want US stocks, and prefer no maintenance charge beyond year one.

About each app

What is Angel One?

Angel One (formerly Angel Broking) is one of India's largest retail brokers, with more than three decades in the business and over 3.8 crore registered users by its own count. Unlike pure discount brokers, it calls itself a full-service house: alongside the trading app it offers research, stock recommendations, a network of authorised persons around the country and in-app learning. The app and web platform cover equities, futures and options, commodities, currencies, mutual funds, IPOs and margin trading. Account opening is free, new customers get no brokerage in their first 30 days (up to a cap) and no maintenance charge in the first year, and mutual fund and IPO investments carry no commission. After the introductory period, trades are charged per order. Angel One moved to a digital-first model in 2019 and now targets newer investors in smaller cities as well as active traders. It runs on Android, iOS and the web.

What is Groww?

Groww is a Bengaluru-based investing app that began with mutual funds and grew into a full broker for Indian stocks, ETFs, IPOs, futures and options, commodities and US stocks. It is known for a simple, clean interface aimed at first-time investors, and it says it serves more than 50 million customers. Opening a trading and demat account is free and fully online, there is no annual account maintenance charge, and direct mutual fund investments (lump sum or SIP) carry no commission. Stock trades cost a small fee per executed order, capped at ₹20, plus the usual government and exchange charges. More active traders can use the separate Groww Terminal and 915 platforms, stock screeners, margin trading and an API for algorithmic trading. Groww also runs its own mutual fund house, which some investors will want to keep in mind when browsing fund suggestions. It runs on Android, iOS and the web.
