Budibase

Open-source platform for internal apps, automations and AI agents, with built-in data tables.

Open sourceSelf-hostable

The short answer

Appsmith and Budibase are both open-source, self-hostable internal tool builders, but they aim at different builders. Appsmith is a developer canvas for wiring widgets to databases and APIs with JavaScript; Budibase generates CRUD screens automatically from a data source and includes its own database and automations. Developer teams usually prefer Appsmith's flexibility; IT and operations teams building form-heavy apps often get there faster with Budibase.

Appsmith or Budibase: our take

Appsmith works like an open-source Retool. Developers place tables, forms, charts and modals on a canvas, connect them to Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB or any REST or GraphQL API, and write JavaScript between them. Apps can be versioned with Git and moved between environments, and newer releases add workflows and an AI assistant. Budibase starts from the data instead: point it at its built-in database, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, Google Sheets or a REST API, and it can generate forms, tables and detail screens automatically, so a simple CRUD app takes minutes. Its automations handle approvals, notifications and scheduled jobs, and it has added AI agents that act on data. The trade-off is layout flexibility, which is lower than Appsmith's.

Both can be self-hosted for free. Appsmith's Community Edition is Apache-2.0 licensed; Budibase's self-hosted edition is free with unlimited actions and unlimited users. Some governance features, such as enforced single sign-on on Budibase or SSO and audit logs on Appsmith, need paid licences. Hosted pricing differs in shape. Appsmith's cloud is free for up to 5 users, with a Business plan at $15 per user/month. Budibase Cloud's Pro plan is $19/month, with a 14-day free trial, and charges by actions and creators, with an end users add-on at $5 per user/month; pricing by actions can be harder to predict.

Choose Appsmith when developers are building custom tools with non-trivial logic, need Git-based workflows, or want fine control over layout. Choose Budibase when the main need is request portals, inventory trackers and admin screens over existing data, built quickly by IT or ops staff with light coding, or when a built-in database and automations remove the need for separate services.

Which should you pick?

Choose Appsmith if…

  • Developer teams that want a Retool-style builder they can self-host for free
  • Apache-licensed and free to self-host
  • Git-based version control for apps

Choose Budibase if…

  • IT and ops teams building form-heavy internal apps they can self-host
  • Auto-generated CRUD screens from a data source
  • Built-in database plus external SQL, NoSQL and API connectors

About each app

What is Appsmith?

Appsmith is one of the most popular open-source alternatives to Retool. Developers drag widgets such as tables, forms, charts and modals onto a canvas, connect them to databases like Postgres, MySQL and MongoDB or to any REST or GraphQL API, and write JavaScript for logic between them. Apps can be versioned with Git, moved between environments and embedded elsewhere, and newer releases add workflows and an AI assistant for generating queries and code. Because the Community Edition is Apache-licensed, companies can self-host it on Docker or Kubernetes at no cost and keep data inside their network, which is the main reason many choose it over closed platforms. The hosted cloud has a free plan for up to five users, a Business plan priced per user, and an Enterprise plan for large deployments with single sign-on and audit logs. It runs in the browser. The widget set is smaller and less polished than Retool's, and complex apps can feel slower.

What is Budibase?

Budibase is an open-source low-code platform for building internal tools quickly. It can generate forms, tables and detail screens automatically from a data source, whether that is its own built-in database, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, Google Sheets or a REST API, so simple CRUD apps take minutes rather than days. Automations handle approvals, notifications and scheduled jobs, and recent releases add AI agents that act on your data, plus role-based access and app publishing for end users. Operations and IT teams use it for request portals, inventory trackers and admin screens. The open-source edition can be self-hosted with Docker or Kubernetes with unlimited users and actions, while Budibase Cloud plans are priced per month by actions and creators, with paid add-ons for end users and enterprise features such as SSO enforcement and custom branding. It runs in the browser. Advanced layouts are less flexible than in Retool, and some governance features are reserved for enterprise licences.
