Amazon Lightsail vs Linode
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Amazon Lightsail
AWS's fixed-price virtual servers, bundled with storage, transfer and a static IP.

Linode
Developer cloud from Akamai with virtual machines, managed Kubernetes, storage and databases.
The short answer
Amazon Lightsail and Linode both sell simple virtual servers with storage and transfer bundled into a predictable price. Lightsail starts at $5 USD/month with a static IP, offers Windows plans, and lets you grow into the rest of AWS. Linode, part of Akamai Cloud, adds managed Kubernetes, GPU instances and dedicated CPUs. Pick Lightsail if AWS is your long-term home; pick Linode for a broader developer cloud outside AWS.
Amazon Lightsail or Linode: our take
Lightsail is AWS's answer to developer clouds like Linode. It packages memory, vCPUs, SSD storage and transfer into fixed monthly bundles instead of EC2's many separate meters, with a console that hides most of AWS's complexity. Plans start at $5 USD/month with IPv4, Windows server plans start at $9.50 USD/month, and a static IP, DNS management and browser SSH are included. Managed databases, load balancers, block and object storage, a CDN and container services are available at similar flat prices, and new customers can try it under the AWS Free Tier.
Linode follows the same bundled, capped-monthly model, billing CPU, RAM, storage and transfer together. Its range is wider for developers: shared and dedicated-CPU machines, GPU instances, the managed Linode Kubernetes Engine, NodeBalancers, firewalls and DNS, plus an API, a CLI and a one-click app marketplace. Qualifying businesses can get cloud credits of up to US$5,000.
The biggest practical difference is where each leads. Lightsail's main draw is that it runs on AWS, so a project can later connect to other AWS services or move to EC2 without changing providers. The trade-offs are an AWS account and billing setup that can feel heavy for a single server, smaller transfer allowances in some Asian regions, and lower specs for the price than budget hosts. Linode is self-contained and simpler to approach as a whole cloud, though its rebranding to Akamai Cloud spreads docs across two sites, and it has fewer managed services than the large clouds.
Choose Lightsail for a WordPress site, a small app or a Windows server that may one day need S3, RDS or other AWS services. Choose Linode for container workloads on managed Kubernetes, GPU jobs, or a team that wants a full developer cloud without stepping into AWS.

- You need Linux and Windows, which Linode doesn't list
- Fixed monthly bundles including transfer
- Static IP and DNS management included
Choose Linode if…
- Developers who want simple, predictable cloud servers plus managed Kubernetes and databases
- Bundled pricing that includes transfer with each plan
- Managed Kubernetes, databases and object storage
About each app
What is Amazon Lightsail?
Amazon Lightsail is the simple end of AWS: virtual private servers sold as fixed monthly bundles of memory, vCPUs, SSD storage and data transfer, instead of EC2's many separate meters. You choose a Linux or Windows image or a ready-made app such as WordPress, pick a bundle, and manage it from a console that hides most of AWS's complexity, with a static IP, DNS management and browser SSH included. Alongside servers it offers managed databases, load balancers, block storage, object storage, a CDN and container services at similar flat prices. New customers can try it under the AWS Free Tier. Because it runs on AWS, you can later connect it to other AWS services or move workloads to EC2. Trade-offs include smaller transfer allowances in some Asian regions, IPv4 costing more than IPv6-only bundles, and an AWS account and billing setup that can feel heavy for a single small server.
What is Linode?
Linode is one of the original developer-focused cloud providers and, since Akamai bought it, the core of what Akamai now sells as Akamai Cloud. It offers shared and dedicated-CPU virtual machines, GPU instances, the Linode Kubernetes Engine, block and object storage, managed databases, load balancers (NodeBalancers), firewalls and DNS, all billed by the hour with a monthly cap. Pricing bundles CPU, RAM, storage and a transfer allowance into each plan, which keeps bills predictable compared with hyperscalers. Linode is known for clear documentation, a straightforward web console, an API and a CLI, and a marketplace of one-click apps. It suits developers, startups and small companies that want more than a cheap VPS but less complexity than AWS. New accounts and qualifying businesses can get cloud credits. Branding has shifted toward Akamai, so docs and product pages now live partly on Akamai's site.
