The short answer

Azure Logic Apps suits integration teams already on Azure, especially those needing B2B/EDI or a path off BizTalk, with pay-per-execution pricing available. Workato suits mid-sized and large companies that want one governed, low-code automation platform across departments. The biggest difference is ecosystem and buying model: an Azure service billed through your subscription versus an independent platform sold through sales.

Azure Logic Apps or Workato: our take

Azure Logic Apps is Microsoft's cloud integration service. Workflows are designed visually with 1,400+ connectors for Azure, Microsoft 365, SaaS apps, databases and on-premises systems like SAP and IBM MQ, and developers can drop into inline JavaScript, C# or PowerShell or call Azure Functions. Workato is an enterprise iPaaS where automations, called recipes, are built in a low-code editor that business technologists can use, while IT keeps control through governance, environments, logging and role-based access. Workato advertises connectivity to 17,000+ apps, APIs and data sources and adds API management, chatbots for Slack and Teams, an enterprise MCP layer and AI agents.

Logic Apps has a specific strength in B2B messaging: it supports AS2, EDIFACT, X12 and RosettaNet and talks to BizTalk Server in both directions, making it Microsoft's main migration path off BizTalk. Workato reaches internal systems through on-premise agents included per edition and targets cross-department flows such as quote-to-cash, employee onboarding and ERP-to-CRM sync.

Pricing and audience differ. Logic Apps needs an Azure subscription and offers two hosting models: Consumption, a pay-per-execution multitenant option that suits low-volume workflows, and Standard, a single-tenant option with more control. Having two models with different features adds complexity. Workato publishes no list price; editions plus usage-based consumption are negotiated through sales, which puts it out of reach for small teams.

Choose Logic Apps if your organisation is on Azure, has developers comfortable with it, or needs EDI and BizTalk interoperability. Choose Workato if you want a vendor-neutral platform where business teams build automations under IT governance and you can budget for an enterprise contract.

Which should you pick?

Choose Azure Logic Apps if…

  • Visual designer with inline code when needed

Choose Workato if…

  • Mid-sized and large companies standardising integrations and automation across departments
  • Strong governance and IT controls
  • Covers integration, automation, APIs and agents

About each app

What is Azure Logic Apps?

Azure Logic Apps is Microsoft's cloud integration service for building workflows that connect apps, data and systems. You design workflows in a visual designer and pick from a large catalogue of prebuilt connectors for Azure, Microsoft 365, SaaS apps, databases and on-premises systems such as SAP and IBM MQ, and you can drop into inline JavaScript, C# or PowerShell, or call Azure Functions, when connectors aren't enough. It supports enterprise B2B messaging with AS2, X12 and EDIFACT, and it can talk to BizTalk Server in both directions, which makes it Microsoft's main path off BizTalk. There are two hosting models: Consumption, a pay-per-execution multitenant option, and Standard, a single-tenant option with more control that can also run in other environments. It is aimed at developers and integration teams already on Azure, rather than at non-technical users building quick personal automations.

What is Workato?

Workato is an enterprise iPaaS that combines application integration, workflow automation, API management and, increasingly, AI agents in one platform. Automations are called recipes and are built in a low-code editor that business technologists can use, while IT keeps control through governance, environments, logging and role-based access. It connects to a very large set of SaaS apps, databases, files and on-premises systems, the latter through on-premise agents, and offers chatbots for Slack and Teams, an enterprise MCP layer and an employee assistant. Workato is mainly bought by mid-sized and large companies that want one platform across departments, for flows like quote-to-cash, employee onboarding and data sync between ERP and CRM. Pricing is not published as a list price: plans are sold as editions with a usage-based consumption component, negotiated through sales. That puts it out of reach for small teams, and the breadth can be more than simple automation needs. It is browser-based.
