Bitdefender GravityZone
Bitdefender's business endpoint security platform with cloud or on-premises management.
Sophos Endpoint
Sophos's business endpoint protection, formerly Intercept X, with anti-ransomware rollback and optional EDR.
The short answer
Bitdefender GravityZone and Sophos Endpoint are business endpoint security platforms with ransomware rollback and optional EDR, XDR and managed response. GravityZone stands out for letting you run the console yourself as a virtual appliance and for selling its small-business package online. Sophos Endpoint is cloud-managed only, sold through partners, and fits organisations already using Sophos firewalls or MDR.
Bitdefender GravityZone or Sophos Endpoint: our take
Both protect Windows, macOS and Linux desktops and servers with a single agent. GravityZone combines machine-learning detection, behaviour monitoring, network attack blocking, web filtering and ransomware rollback that restores encrypted files from backup copies, plus a risk dashboard that flags misconfigurations and risky users. Sophos Endpoint, formerly Intercept X, uses deep-learning malware prevention, more than 60 exploit mitigations on by default, and CryptoGuard to detect malicious encryption and roll files back. Its Adaptive Attack Protection tightens settings when it detects a hands-on attacker.
Management is the clearest difference. GravityZone can be used as a cloud console or run on-premises as a virtual appliance (OVA, XVA or VHD), which helps organisations that need to keep management in-house. Sophos Endpoint is managed only in Sophos's cloud console, alongside its firewalls and email security, which is convenient for existing Sophos customers.
Both extend through add-ons. GravityZone offers EDR and XDR, patch management, full-disk encryption, email security, mobile protection for iOS, Android and ChromeOS, and a managed detection and response service; the trade-off is that many features sit in separate add-ons and the console has a lot of settings to learn. Sophos adds EDR, XDR and its widely used MDR service, with analysts watching around the clock.
Buying works differently too. GravityZone's small-business package can be bought online for a set number of devices, while larger customers use partners. Sophos sells mainly through resellers and managed service providers and publishes no prices; it offers a 30-day free trial, and GravityZone also has a free trial. Pick GravityZone for self-hosted management or online purchase; pick Sophos when working with a Sophos partner or already running Sophos firewalls.

About each app
What is Bitdefender GravityZone?
GravityZone is Bitdefender's security platform for businesses, separate from its consumer antivirus apps. Agents on Windows, macOS and Linux desktops, laptops and servers (physical or virtual) combine machine-learning malware detection, behaviour monitoring, ransomware rollback, network attack blocking and web filtering. A risk dashboard points out misconfigurations and risky users, and everything is managed from one console that you can use as a cloud service or run yourself as a virtual appliance. Higher tiers and add-ons bring EDR and XDR, patch management, full-disk encryption, email security, mobile protection for iOS and Android, and Bitdefender's managed detection and response service. Small businesses can buy the entry package online for a set number of devices, while larger companies and managed service providers buy through partners. It suits IT teams that want strong protection without a dedicated security operations centre. Plans are paid subscriptions per device, with a free trial.
What is Sophos Endpoint?
Sophos Endpoint is the business endpoint protection product from Sophos, the UK security company, and the successor to what was long sold as Intercept X. One lightweight agent on Windows, macOS and Linux machines and servers combines deep-learning malware prevention, more than 60 exploit mitigations and CryptoGuard, which spots malicious encryption and restores affected files. Adaptive Attack Protection switches to stricter settings when it detects a hands-on attacker. Sophos EDR and XDR add investigation and response tools, and many customers buy Sophos MDR, where Sophos analysts watch and respond around the clock. Everything is managed in Sophos's cloud console alongside its firewalls and email security. Sophos sells mainly through resellers and managed service providers, so prices are not published; a 30-day free trial is available. It suits small and mid-size organisations, especially those using a Sophos partner or Sophos firewalls.
