The short answer

Both are free, ad-supported search engines that do not profile you. The biggest difference is where results come from: Brave Search runs its own independent index, while DuckDuckGo draws largely on Bing plus its own crawler. Pick Brave Search for independent results, Goggles re-ranking and a developer API; pick DuckDuckGo for its bangs, broad familiarity and a tracker-blocking browser available on Windows, Mac and mobile.

Brave Search or DuckDuckGo: our take

Brave Search is one of the few Western engines with its own large index rather than resold Bing or Google results, and it says when it mixes in third-party results for long-tail queries. It adds AI answers with citations, an Ask mode for longer questions, and Goggles, a beta feature for re-ranking results with your own or community rules. DuckDuckGo blends many sources, largely Bing, with its DuckDuckBot crawler and sources such as Wikipedia, so its results often resemble Bing's. Its standout features are bangs, instant answers and Duck.ai, a free, optional private AI chat.

Both show privacy-preserving ads and offer paid options. Brave Search Premium removes ads but only works in the Brave browser. DuckDuckGo's subscription adds a VPN, data-broker removal and more AI models. For developers, Brave offers a Search API, popular for grounding AI agents, with up to $20 in free calls per month.

Both are weaker than Google for niche and local queries. Brave's company also sells a browser, a crypto wallet and ads, which some users dislike; DuckDuckGo's reliance on Microsoft's index is the equivalent concern for those wanting independence. DuckDuckGo's own browser runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.

Choose Brave Search if you want results that do not come from Google or Bing, like custom re-ranking, or need a search API. Choose DuckDuckGo if you want a well-known private engine with fast bangs and do not mind that much of its index comes from Bing.

Which should you pick?

Choose Brave Search if…

  • Privacy-minded users who want results that don't come from Google or Bing
  • Own independent index, not a Bing or Google reseller
  • AI answers with sources, plus Goggles for custom re-ranking

Choose DuckDuckGo if…

  • People who want a familiar, free search engine without being profiled
  • You need Windows, macOS and Browser extension, which Brave Search doesn't list
  • No search history or ad profile tied to you
  • Bangs make jumping to other sites' search very fast

About each app

What is Brave Search?

Brave Search comes from the company behind the Brave browser and is one of the few Western engines with its own large index rather than reselling Bing or Google results. It does not build a profile of you, and it adds AI-generated answers with citations at the top of many results, plus an Ask mode for longer questions. Goggles, a beta feature, let you or a community re-rank results with custom rules, for example to favour tech blogs or exclude big media sites. Basic search is free and shows privacy-preserving ads; Brave Search Premium removes them. Developers can use the Brave Search API, which is popular for grounding AI agents and comes with monthly free credit. It works in any browser and is the default in Brave. For very long-tail queries it occasionally mixes in third-party results, which it discloses.

What is DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo is the best-known private alternative to Google. It does not keep a search history tied to you or build an advertising profile, and the ads it shows are based on the current query only. Results come from many sources, largely Microsoft's Bing index, combined with DuckDuckGo's own crawler and specialised sources such as Wikipedia. Handy extras include bangs (type !w or !a to jump straight to a site's own search), instant answers, and Duck.ai, a private chat front end for popular AI models that you can switch off. The company also makes a privacy browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android that blocks trackers and cookie pop-ups. Search is free and ad-supported; a paid subscription adds a VPN, data-broker removal and more AI models. Results are usually good for everyday queries but can lag Google on very local or very recent searches.
