DigitalOcean Droplets vs Linode
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean's simple Linux virtual servers with flat monthly pricing.

Linode
Developer cloud from Akamai with virtual machines, managed Kubernetes, storage and databases.
The short answer
DigitalOcean Droplets and Linode are close rivals: both sell simple developer-focused virtual servers with transfer bundled into a capped monthly price, plus managed Kubernetes, databases and storage. Droplets start at $4 per month and are known for a tidy dashboard and tutorials; Linode, now part of Akamai Cloud, adds GPU instances and credits for qualifying businesses. The choice usually comes down to region, specific plan specs and ecosystem preference.
DigitalOcean Droplets or Linode: our take
Both providers aim at the same people: developers, startups and small companies who want more than a bare budget VPS but far less complexity than AWS. Each bills by the hour with a monthly cap, bundles CPU, RAM, storage and a transfer allowance into each plan, and offers shared and dedicated-CPU machines, block and object storage, load balancers, managed databases and managed Kubernetes from one control panel and API. Both also run marketplaces of one-click app images and have long-standing, well-regarded documentation.
On price, Droplets start at $4 per month with transfer from 500 GiB/month included and free inbound bandwidth; automatic backups cost extra at 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet price. Linode uses the same bundled approach, and qualifying businesses can get cloud credits of up to US$5,000. Neither is the cheapest option per core and RAM; both cost more than budget European hosts such as Hetzner.
The differences are mostly in ecosystem and direction. Linode is now the core of Akamai Cloud, which brings Akamai's backing and GPU instances, but its rebranding means docs and product pages are split between two sites. DigitalOcean keeps a single, tidy dashboard and an extensive tutorial library, and its data centres span North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore. Both have fewer regions and fewer managed services than the big three clouds.
Pick DigitalOcean if a polished dashboard, its tutorials and a very low entry price matter most, or if one of its regions suits your users. Pick Linode if you want GPU instances, value Akamai's ownership, or qualify for its startup credits. For a typical web app, compare plan specs and data centre locations side by side, since day-to-day use is very similar.
Which should you pick?
Choose DigitalOcean Droplets if…
- Developers who want a simple, well-documented VPS with predictable monthly pricing.
- You need Linux, which Linode doesn't list
- Clear flat pricing with included transfer
- Easy control panel and API
Choose Linode if…
- Developers who want simple, predictable cloud servers plus managed Kubernetes and databases
- Bundled pricing that includes transfer with each plan
- Managed Kubernetes, databases and object storage
About each app
What is DigitalOcean Droplets?
Droplets are DigitalOcean's virtual machines, aimed at developers and small teams who want a cloud server without the complexity of the big hyperscalers. You pick a Linux distribution or a one-click app image, a size and a data centre, and get a server with SSH access in about a minute. Plans run from a small shared-CPU machine for a few dollars a month up to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, each with a set amount of outbound transfer included and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. Inbound traffic is free. Add-ons include automatic backups, snapshots, block storage volumes, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes from the same control panel and API. Data centres span North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore. DigitalOcean is known for clear documentation and a tidy dashboard; compared with providers such as Hetzner or OVHcloud it can cost more for the same hardware, and it offers fewer regions than AWS.
What is Linode?
Linode is one of the original developer-focused cloud providers and, since Akamai bought it, the core of what Akamai now sells as Akamai Cloud. It offers shared and dedicated-CPU virtual machines, GPU instances, the Linode Kubernetes Engine, block and object storage, managed databases, load balancers (NodeBalancers), firewalls and DNS, all billed by the hour with a monthly cap. Pricing bundles CPU, RAM, storage and a transfer allowance into each plan, which keeps bills predictable compared with hyperscalers. Linode is known for clear documentation, a straightforward web console, an API and a CLI, and a marketplace of one-click apps. It suits developers, startups and small companies that want more than a cheap VPS but less complexity than AWS. New accounts and qualifying businesses can get cloud credits. Branding has shifted toward Akamai, so docs and product pages now live partly on Akamai's site.
