DigitalOcean Droplets vs OVHcloud
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean's simple Linux virtual servers with flat monthly pricing.

OVHcloud
French cloud provider offering VPS, bare-metal servers, public cloud and web hosting.
The short answer
DigitalOcean Droplets suit developers who want a tidy dashboard, clear docs and managed databases and Kubernetes next to their servers. OVHcloud suits budget-minded users, especially in Europe, who want cheap VPS plans with unlimited traffic, daily backups and built-in DDoS protection. The biggest difference is polish versus price: DigitalOcean is easier to use, while OVHcloud gives more for the money with a rougher experience.
DigitalOcean Droplets or OVHcloud: our take
Droplets are DigitalOcean's Linux virtual machines. You pick a distribution or one-click app, a size and a data centre, and have an SSH-ready server in about a minute. Plans range from small shared-CPU machines up to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, with hourly billing capped at a monthly price. Backups, snapshots, block storage, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes all live in the same control panel and API, and the documentation and tutorials are widely praised. Data centres cover North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore.
OVHcloud is a French provider founded in 1999 that owns its data centres and network. Its range is much wider: shared web hosting and domains, VPS, bare-metal dedicated servers, a public cloud with GPUs, managed Kubernetes and S3-compatible storage, and hosted private cloud. Anti-DDoS protection is included on all products, and it pitches itself on data sovereignty as a European alternative to US clouds.
On price, Droplets start at $4 per month with transfer included from 500 GiB/month and free inbound traffic; backups cost extra at 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet price. OVHcloud VPS plans start from $4.54/month for VPS-1 and include unlimited traffic and daily backup, though bandwidth can be capped after some regional quotas. Higher OVHcloud tiers run from $8.50 a month for VPS-2. DigitalOcean generally costs more per core and RAM than budget European hosts.
The trade-off is experience. DigitalOcean is tidy and predictable, while OVHcloud's catalogue is sprawling and its control panel and support are less polished. Choose Droplets if you value a clean workflow, good docs and managed services alongside your server. Choose OVHcloud if you want more resources per dollar, bundled backups and DDoS protection, dedicated servers, or a European provider for sovereignty reasons.
Which should you pick?
Choose DigitalOcean Droplets if…
- Developers who want a simple, well-documented VPS with predictable monthly pricing.
- You need Linux, which OVHcloud doesn't list
- Clear flat pricing with included transfer
- Easy control panel and API
Choose OVHcloud if…
- European businesses and hobbyists wanting cheap VPS or dedicated servers with built-in DDoS protection
- Anti-DDoS protection included on every product
- VPS plans include unlimited traffic and daily backup
About each app
What is DigitalOcean Droplets?
Droplets are DigitalOcean's virtual machines, aimed at developers and small teams who want a cloud server without the complexity of the big hyperscalers. You pick a Linux distribution or a one-click app image, a size and a data centre, and get a server with SSH access in about a minute. Plans run from a small shared-CPU machine for a few dollars a month up to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, each with a set amount of outbound transfer included and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. Inbound traffic is free. Add-ons include automatic backups, snapshots, block storage volumes, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes from the same control panel and API. Data centres span North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore. DigitalOcean is known for clear documentation and a tidy dashboard; compared with providers such as Hetzner or OVHcloud it can cost more for the same hardware, and it offers fewer regions than AWS.
What is OVHcloud?
OVHcloud is a French infrastructure company and one of the largest hosting providers in Europe. Its range runs from shared web hosting and domains through VPS plans to bare-metal dedicated servers, a public cloud with instances, GPUs, managed Kubernetes and S3-compatible object storage, and hosted private cloud. It owns its data centres and network, includes anti-DDoS protection by default, and is known for water-cooled servers. VPS plans are low-cost and come with unlimited traffic and daily backups, which makes them popular for websites, game servers and VPNs. A recurring selling point is data sovereignty: for European customers, OVHcloud presents itself as an alternative to US hyperscalers. Prices are monthly, or hourly on the public cloud. The trade-offs are a sprawling, sometimes confusing catalogue and a control panel and support that are less polished than smaller developer-focused clouds.
