Google Analytics vs Matomo
Updated October 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Google Analytics
Google's free, event-based analytics for websites and apps, tightly linked to Google Ads.

Matomo
Open-source Google Analytics alternative you can self-host or use as a cloud service.
The short answer
Google Analytics suits sites that want free, deep analytics tied to Google Ads and the rest of Google's marketing tools. Matomo suits organisations that want similar depth but full ownership of their data, either self-hosted or in an EU cloud. The biggest difference is control: GA4 runs on Google's terms, while Matomo can run on your own server without sampling.
Google Analytics or Matomo: our take
Matomo, formerly Piwik, is the best-known open-source alternative to Google Analytics, and it covers much of the same ground: visitors, referrers, campaigns, goals, ecommerce, funnels, custom reports and segments. GA4 collects event-based data from websites and apps in one property and adds Explorations, remarketing audiences and predictive metrics, with direct links to Google Ads, Search Console and BigQuery.
Data handling separates them. GA4's data is modelled and sometimes thresholded, and its cookie-based tracking usually requires a consent banner in the EU, where regulators have questioned its use. Matomo does no data sampling, can keep report data forever on its cloud, and can be configured to track without cookies. That is why governments, universities and EU companies often pick it for GDPR-friendly analytics.
On cost and hosting, GA4 is free, with Analytics 360 as a paid enterprise tier. Matomo On-Premise is free to run on your own PHP and MySQL server under the GPL, while Matomo Cloud is hosted in Europe, priced by monthly hits, and has a free trial with no credit card. Self-hosting large sites needs tuning, and extras such as heatmaps and session recordings are paid plugins. Both interfaces get criticised: GA4 for complexity, Matomo for feeling dated and busy.
Choose Google Analytics if you advertise on Google, want BigQuery exports, or need a free tool with very high limits and broad platform support. Choose Matomo if you need to own your data, want unsampled reports, have legal or policy reasons to avoid sending visitor data to Google, or want the option of cookie-free tracking.
Which should you pick?

- You want open-source software
- You need to host it on your own servers
- You need Self-hosted, which Google Analytics doesn't list

About each app
What is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics, now in its GA4 generation, is the default traffic analytics tool for most websites. It collects event-based data from websites and apps in one property, then offers standard reports, a flexible Explorations area for funnels, paths and segments, audiences for remarketing, and predictive metrics built on Google's machine learning. Its biggest advantage is integration: it connects directly to Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery and the rest of Google's marketing tools, and nearly every CMS and ecommerce platform supports it. The standard version is free; Analytics 360 is a paid enterprise tier with higher limits and service agreements. The downsides are well known. GA4's interface is complex and many people find it harder to use than the older Universal Analytics, data is modelled and sometimes thresholded, and its cookie-based tracking usually requires a consent banner in the EU, where regulators have questioned its use. It is a web app with iOS and Android apps for checking reports.
What is Matomo?
Matomo, formerly Piwik, is the best-known open-source alternative to Google Analytics. It covers the same broad ground: visitors, referrers, campaigns, goals, ecommerce, funnels, custom reports and segments, with plugins for heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing and more. You can run Matomo On-Premise for free on your own PHP and MySQL server, keeping full ownership of the data, or pay for Matomo Cloud, which is hosted in Europe and priced by monthly hits with a free trial. Reports are not sampled, data can be kept indefinitely, and it can be configured to track without cookies. That makes it a common choice for governments, universities and EU companies that need GDPR-friendly analytics with GA-like depth. The trade-offs are an interface that feels dated and busy, self-hosted performance that needs tuning on large sites, and premium features such as heatmaps sold as paid plugins. The core is GPL-licensed.
