Google BigQuery vs Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Google BigQuery
Google Cloud's serverless data warehouse for SQL analytics, billed per query or by capacity.

Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse
Oracle's self-managing cloud data warehouse, formerly called Autonomous Data Warehouse.
The short answer
Google BigQuery suits teams on Google Cloud or GA4 who want a serverless SQL warehouse with nothing to size or run. Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse, formerly Autonomous Data Warehouse, suits organisations already invested in Oracle who want a self-managing warehouse that keeps Oracle SQL and can run on-premises. The biggest difference is which ecosystem you already live in.
Google BigQuery or Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse: our take
BigQuery is fully serverless: you load data or point it at files in cloud storage, run standard SQL, and Google allocates compute. It adds BigQuery ML for training models in SQL, geospatial functions, streaming inserts and BigQuery Omni for querying data on AWS or Azure, and it receives native exports from Google Analytics 4. Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is the analytics flavour of Oracle's Autonomous AI Database. Oracle handles provisioning, backups, patching, upgrades and scaling, so no database administration is required. Because it is built on Oracle Database, existing Oracle SQL, tools and skills carry over, and it bundles APEX, REST data services, machine learning notebooks, vector search and tighter support for Apache Iceberg.
Deployment options differ sharply. BigQuery runs only on Google Cloud. Oracle's service can run serverless on Oracle Cloud, on dedicated Exadata infrastructure, or in your own data centre with Exadata Cloud@Customer, which matters for data that must stay on-premises.
On pricing, BigQuery's on-demand model starts at $6.25 per TiB scanned, with the first 1 TiB of queries and first 10 GiB of storage free each month; capacity pricing is available for steadier spend. Wide, careless queries can scan a lot and cost more than expected. Oracle is pay-per-use, and its Always Free tier includes two databases with 20 GB each, but Oracle pricing and licensing are generally harder to estimate. The recent rename also means older guides refer to Autonomous Data Warehouse.
Choose BigQuery if you are on Google Cloud, rely on GA4 data, or want a warehouse with no operations work and a generous free query allowance. Choose Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse if your team already runs Oracle databases, wants Oracle SQL compatibility, or needs the option of running the warehouse in its own data centre.
Which should you pick?
Choose Google BigQuery if…
- Teams on Google Cloud or GA4 who want a warehouse with no servers to manage
- Fully serverless, with nothing to size or keep running
- Monthly free query and storage allowance for small projects
Choose Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse if…
- Oracle shops that want a managed analytics warehouse without running database administration
- Patching, backups, tuning and scaling are handled by the service
- Full Oracle SQL compatibility for teams with existing Oracle skills
About each app
What is Google BigQuery?
BigQuery is Google Cloud's serverless data warehouse. There are no clusters or instances to set up: you load data or point it at files in cloud storage and run standard SQL, and Google allocates compute behind the scenes. It suits teams already on Google Cloud, marketers working with Google Analytics 4 exports, and anyone who wants a warehouse without operations work. It includes built-in machine learning in SQL (BigQuery ML), geospatial functions, streaming inserts, and BigQuery Omni for querying data held on AWS or Azure. Pricing has two compute models: on-demand, where you pay for the bytes each query scans with the first chunk each month free, and capacity pricing for predictable spend; storage is billed separately with a small free allowance. It only runs on Google Cloud, and careless queries over wide tables can scan a lot of data and cost more than expected.
What is Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse?
Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is the current name for Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, the analytics flavour of Oracle's managed Autonomous AI Database. Oracle presents it as the next generation of the old service: it keeps the warehouse features and adds tighter integration with Apache Iceberg and other open data formats. As with the rest of the Autonomous family, Oracle handles provisioning, backups, patching, upgrades and scaling of compute and storage, so there is no database administration to do. It is built on Oracle Database, so existing Oracle SQL, tools and skills carry over, and it bundles Oracle APEX, REST data services, machine learning notebooks and vector search. You can run it serverless on Oracle Cloud, on dedicated Exadata infrastructure, or in your own data centre with Exadata Cloud@Customer. Pricing is pay-per-use, and Oracle's Always Free tier includes two small Autonomous AI Databases. It mainly suits organisations already invested in Oracle.
