Google Wallet vs PayPal
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Google Wallet
Google's Android wallet for tap-to-pay cards, passes, tickets, transit cards and digital keys.

PayPal
Online payment account and app for paying shops, sending money and buying now, paying later.
The short answer
Google Wallet is a free Android wallet for tap-to-pay in shops plus passes, tickets, transit cards and car keys. PayPal is an account for paying online, sending money to people and buying now, paying later, on iPhone, Android and the web. Use Google Wallet to pay with your phone in person; use PayPal for online checkout and person-to-person payments. Many people use both.
Google Wallet or PayPal: our take
The two are both called wallets but cover different moments. Google Wallet stores payment cards for contactless payments wherever Google Pay is accepted, and also holds loyalty and gift cards, boarding passes, event tickets, transit cards and, on select cars, digital car keys. It uses tokenized card numbers instead of your real number and needs an NFC phone. PayPal links cards and bank accounts to one account so you can check out on websites and apps without typing card details, send and request money, split costs, and pay in instalments with Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly in eligible regions. It isn't a full tap-to-pay phone wallet in most countries.
Devices are the biggest practical limit. Google Wallet is Android only, including Wear OS watches, with no iPhone app. PayPal works on iPhone, Android and the web, which makes it easier for sending money between friends on different phones.
Costs and protection differ too. Google Wallet is free; your card issuer's normal terms apply. PayPal is free to open and free for buyers paying for purchases, but fees apply to some transfers, currency conversion and receiving payments for sales. In the US, PayPal Checkout costs sellers 3.49% plus a fixed fee, with an extra 1.50% on international commercial payments. Eligible PayPal purchases are covered by Purchase Protection. Supported banks and features vary widely by country for both.
Android users who want to tap their phone or watch at the till and keep passes and tickets in one place should set up Google Wallet. People who shop online a lot, want buyer protection, or send money to friends regardless of their phone should use PayPal. Since one covers in-store payments and the other online checkout and transfers, using both is common.
Which should you pick?

- You need iOS, which Google Wallet doesn't list
- Accepted at a very large number of online stores
- Works on any phone and in the browser
About each app
What is Google Wallet?
Google Wallet is the wallet app on Android phones and Wear OS watches. It stores payment cards for contactless payments wherever Google Pay is accepted, plus loyalty and gift cards, boarding passes, event tickets, transit cards and, on supported cars, digital car keys. Tickets and passes can surface automatically around the time you need them, and transit balances link up with Google Maps. Payments use tokenized card numbers instead of your real card number, and the phone needs NFC for tap-to-pay. Supported banks, cards and features vary a lot by country, so it's worth checking your region's list before relying on it. The app is free to use; your card issuer's normal terms apply. It doesn't run on iPhone, which is the main limit for anyone with mixed devices.
What is PayPal?
PayPal is a digital wallet that links your cards and bank accounts to one account, so you can check out on websites and in apps without typing card details. The app also handles sending and requesting money between people, splitting costs, paying in instalments with Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly in eligible regions, a PayPal debit card, savings and buying cryptocurrency in some countries. Eligible purchases are covered by Purchase Protection, and logins can use biometrics and passkeys. It works on iPhone, Android and the web and is accepted by a huge number of online stores. Opening an account and using the app are free for buyers; fees apply to some transfers, currency conversion and receiving payments for sales. Unlike Apple, Google or Samsung Wallet, it isn't mainly a tap-to-pay phone wallet, and feature availability varies a lot by country.
