The short answer

Pick Visio if your organisation is standardised on Microsoft 365, exchanges .vsdx files, and works mostly on Windows. Pick Lucidchart if your team works across Mac, Windows and the browser, uses Google Workspace or Atlassian, and wants smooth real-time collaboration. The biggest difference is platform: Visio's full desktop app is Windows-only, while Lucidchart is a cross-platform web app.

Lucidchart or Microsoft Visio: our take

Visio is the long-standing diagramming tool of the Microsoft world, and its .vsdx format is still what many companies expect to exchange. It covers flowcharts, cross-functional and BPMN process diagrams, org charts, network and floor plans, Azure and AWS architecture and UML or ERD diagrams, and it integrates deeply with Teams, SharePoint, Excel and Power BI. Lucidchart covers similar ground in the browser, with real-time collaboration, comments and revision history, integrations with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Atlassian and Slack, data linking to Google Sheets, Excel and CSV, Mermaid diagrams as code and AI drafting.

Visio's pricing is low and tiered. A basic web version comes with many Microsoft 365 business plans. Visio Plan 1 costs $5 per user/month paid yearly and adds the full web app; Plan 2 costs $15 per user/month paid yearly and adds the Windows desktop app with offline files and advanced process diagrams. Perpetual Standard and Professional 2024 licences are also sold, and there is a one-month free trial. Lucidchart has a limited free plan, with paid individual, team and enterprise plans billed per user, plus free education accounts for eligible educators and students.

Platform is the main constraint. Visio's desktop app runs only on Windows, so Mac users are limited to the web version, which has fewer features. Lucidchart runs in any browser and on iOS and Android, though large diagrams can feel sluggish, and costs add up for big teams. Visio's licensing options are confusing to compare; Lucidchart's free plan is too limited for regular use.

For Windows-based organisations already paying for Microsoft 365 and working with .vsdx files, Visio is the natural and often cheaper fit. For mixed-platform teams, or companies built on Google Workspace and Atlassian tools, Lucidchart is the more flexible choice.

Which should you pick?

Choose Lucidchart if…

  • Teams that want a shared, browser-based diagram library tied into their office and dev tools
  • You want a free option (Microsoft Visio is paid only)
  • You need iOS and Android, which Microsoft Visio doesn't list
  • Real-time collaboration with comments and revision history
  • Data linking, org chart imports and conditional formatting

Choose Microsoft Visio if…

  • Companies on Microsoft 365 that need Visio-format diagrams and Office integration
  • You need Windows, which Lucidchart doesn't list
  • Industry-standard .vsdx format many organisations already use
  • Deep integration with Teams, SharePoint, Excel and Power BI

About each app

What is Lucidchart?

Lucidchart is one of the most widely used online diagramming tools, aimed at companies that want a shared place for process maps, org charts, network and cloud diagrams, ERDs and UML. Everything runs in the browser with real-time collaboration, comments and revision history, and it plugs into Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Atlassian and Slack. Where it pulls ahead of simpler editors is data: you can link shapes to spreadsheets, build org charts from imported data, apply conditional formatting, write Mermaid diagrams as code and ask Lucid AI to draft a diagram from a prompt. It is part of the Lucid suite alongside the Lucidspark whiteboard. The free plan is limited in how many documents and shapes you can use, so most regular users end up on a paid individual, team or enterprise plan billed per user. Educators and students can get free education accounts. It is a solid default for organisations, though heavy diagrams can feel slow and costs add up for large teams.

What is Microsoft Visio?

Visio is the long-standing diagramming tool in the Microsoft world, and its .vsdx format is still the file many companies expect to exchange. It covers flowcharts, cross-functional and BPMN process diagrams, org charts, network and floor plans, plus Azure and AWS architecture shapes and UML or ERD diagrams. A basic web version comes with many Microsoft 365 business plans for viewing and light editing. Visio Plan 1 adds the full web app with more shapes, while Plan 2 adds the Windows desktop app with offline files, advanced process diagrams and data-linked visuals. One-off perpetual licences (Standard and Professional 2024) are also sold. Collaboration works through OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. The big limitation is platform: the desktop app is Windows-only, and Mac users are limited to the web version. It suits organisations already standardised on Microsoft 365 rather than individuals looking for a cheap or cross-platform tool.
