Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse vs Snowflake
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse
Oracle's self-managing cloud data warehouse, formerly called Autonomous Data Warehouse.

Snowflake
A fully managed cloud data platform for warehousing, analytics, data sharing and AI workloads.
The short answer
Both are managed cloud data warehouses that remove most database administration. Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse, formerly Autonomous Data Warehouse, suits organisations already invested in Oracle Database, SQL and tooling, and can run on Exadata in your own data centre. Snowflake suits companies that want a cloud-neutral warehouse on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, with separate compute per team and built-in data sharing.
Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse or Snowflake: our take
Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is the analytics flavour of Oracle's Autonomous AI Database. Oracle handles provisioning, backups, patching, upgrades and scaling, so no database administration is required. Because it is built on Oracle Database, existing Oracle SQL, tools and skills carry over, and it bundles Oracle APEX, REST data services, machine learning notebooks and vector search, with tighter integration with Apache Iceberg and other open formats. Snowflake is also fully managed, handling infrastructure, tuning and automatic encryption of all data. Its signature design separates storage from compute so teams run their own virtual warehouses without slowing each other down, and it adds Time Travel, secure data sharing between accounts, a data marketplace, Snowpark and Cortex AI features.
Deployment is a real difference. Oracle's service runs serverless on Oracle Cloud, on dedicated Exadata infrastructure, or in your own data centre through Exadata Cloud@Customer. Snowflake runs only as a managed service, on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, with no self-hosted edition.
Both are pay-per-use. Oracle's Always Free tier includes two small databases with 20 GB per database, which is handy for experiments; Oracle pricing and licensing can be harder to estimate than simpler rivals. Snowflake is a paid service: consumption-based across Standard, Enterprise and Business Critical editions, and costs can climb quickly without close monitoring of warehouse usage. Oracle's recent renaming also means older guides refer to the product by different names.
An organisation with existing Oracle databases, Oracle skills, or a need to keep data on premises will usually find Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse the easier fit. A company that wants a warehouse on the cloud of its choice, shared across many teams and partner accounts, and is not tied to Oracle, will usually lean towards Snowflake.
Which should you pick?
Choose Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse if…
- Oracle shops that want a managed analytics warehouse without running database administration
- You want a free option (Snowflake is paid only)
- Patching, backups, tuning and scaling are handled by the service
- Full Oracle SQL compatibility for teams with existing Oracle skills
Choose Snowflake if…
- Companies that want a managed, governed warehouse shared across many teams and clouds
- Little infrastructure or tuning work compared with running your own database
- Separate compute warehouses stop teams from slowing each other down
About each app
What is Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse?
Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is the current name for Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, the analytics flavour of Oracle's managed Autonomous AI Database. Oracle presents it as the next generation of the old service: it keeps the warehouse features and adds tighter integration with Apache Iceberg and other open data formats. As with the rest of the Autonomous family, Oracle handles provisioning, backups, patching, upgrades and scaling of compute and storage, so there is no database administration to do. It is built on Oracle Database, so existing Oracle SQL, tools and skills carry over, and it bundles Oracle APEX, REST data services, machine learning notebooks and vector search. You can run it serverless on Oracle Cloud, on dedicated Exadata infrastructure, or in your own data centre with Exadata Cloud@Customer. Pricing is pay-per-use, and Oracle's Always Free tier includes two small Autonomous AI Databases. It mainly suits organisations already invested in Oracle.
What is Snowflake?
Snowflake is a cloud data warehouse that runs as a managed service on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. It separates storage from compute, so different teams can run their own virtual warehouses against the same data without slowing each other down, and it handles infrastructure, tuning and encryption for you. Beyond SQL analytics it offers Snowpark for Python and other languages, secure data sharing between accounts, a data marketplace, Time Travel for querying past versions of tables, and a growing set of AI features under the Cortex name. It is aimed at mid-sized and large companies that want one governed place for their analytics data. Pricing is consumption-based: you pay for compute credits and storage, with higher editions (Enterprise, Business Critical) adding features such as multi-cluster compute and stronger compliance controls. There is no self-hosted version, and costs can climb quickly without monitoring of warehouse usage.
