About Amical

Amical is an open-source dictation app for Mac and Windows. You hold a shortcut, speak, and it types the transcribed text into whatever app has focus, using AI to clean up grammar and adjust tone and formatting to the app you are in, so a Slack message reads differently from an email. Transcription can run entirely on your computer with local open-source models, which works offline and keeps audio on the device, or through faster cloud models. It supports custom vocabulary for names and jargon, custom voice shortcuts, and more than 100 languages. The project is MIT-licensed on GitHub. Local dictation is free and unlimited; the free plan also includes a weekly allowance of cloud dictation, and a paid Premium plan removes that cap and adds shared vocabulary and team features, with enterprise options for private hosting and SSO. Mobile apps are advertised. It is a newer project than Wispr Flow or Superwhisper, so expect faster change and rougher edges.

Best for: People who want free, private voice typing on Mac or Windows with optional cloud speed.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Unlimited local dictation on the free plan, with offline use
  • MIT-licensed source code on GitHub
  • Adapts formatting and tone to the app you are typing in
  • Custom vocabulary and 100+ languages

Why people leave

  • Free cloud dictation is capped at a weekly word allowance
  • Local models need a reasonably capable computer for good speed
  • Young project, so features and pricing are still shifting
