About AutoGPT

AutoGPT began in 2023 as one of the first open-source experiments in autonomous GPT agents and has since become a hosted platform for running AI agents on business work. You describe a job in plain English to a coordinating assistant called Otto, which passes it to specialist agents, called Experts, for things like SEO content drafts, prospect research and outreach, or daily briefings. Each Expert can be given instructions, skills and connected apps, with per-agent access and spending limits. Under the hood a visual workflow builder lets you chain blocks with branching logic, reuse workflows from a marketplace, and run them through an API or MCP server. The hosted service is paid after a seven-day trial, with workflow runs drawing on a usage credit balance. You can also self-host it with Docker using your own model keys; the platform code is source-available under the Polyform Shield licence, while the original AutoGPT Classic code is MIT.

Best for: Small teams who want AI agents to draft content, research leads and run routine tasks.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Self-hostable with a single Docker container and your own model keys
  • Visual workflow builder with branching, a marketplace, API and MCP access
  • Per-agent app access and spending controls

Why people leave

  • No free hosted tier: the hosted platform needs a paid plan after the trial
  • Workflow runs cost usage credits on top of the subscription
  • Platform code is source-available (Polyform Shield), not OSI open source
