About Cap
Cap is an open-source screen recorder positioned as an alternative to Loom. It has two modes: Instant Mode uploads as you record and gives you a share link straight away, while Studio Mode records locally at high quality and opens an editor with backgrounds, padding, zooms and cursor effects similar to Screen Studio. Desktop apps run on macOS and Windows, with Linux builds available, and you can self-host the sharing backend on your own infrastructure. Pricing is unusual: personal use of the desktop app is free, a commercial desktop licence is sold per year or as a one-time purchase, and Cap Pro adds unlimited cloud sharing, team features and integrations per user per month. There is also a tool to import an existing Loom library. Being newer, it has fewer integrations and enterprise features than Loom, but it appeals to developers and privacy-minded teams who want to own their recordings.
Best for: Teams wanting a self-hostable Loom alternative with Screen Studio-style polish.
