About Dremio
Dremio is a data lakehouse platform that runs SQL queries directly on data in object storage, mainly Apache Iceberg tables, and federates queries to other databases and warehouses. Instead of loading everything into a proprietary warehouse, you keep data in your own lake and Dremio speeds up repeated dashboard and BI queries with Reflections, its automatically managed acceleration layer. It also includes an open catalog based on Apache Polaris, a semantic layer for shared business definitions and an AI agent for natural-language questions. It comes as Dremio Cloud, a fully managed service on AWS billed by compute units, and Dremio Enterprise, self-managed software for Kubernetes, on-premises or any major cloud, priced through sales. A free Community Edition runs on a single machine or server. Dremio is now part of SAP. It suits data teams that want to cut warehouse spend by serving BI from an Iceberg lakehouse, or that need one SQL layer over several data sources.
Best for: Data teams serving BI and AI workloads from an Apache Iceberg lakehouse instead of a proprietary warehouse.

Pros and cons
What works
- Queries Iceberg data in your own storage without copying it
- Reflections speed up repeated dashboard queries automatically
- Managed cloud or self-managed on Kubernetes and on-premises
- Storage isn't marked up; you pay for compute
Why people leave
- Managed Dremio Cloud runs only on AWS for now
- Enterprise edition pricing requires talking to sales
- Future direction may change now that it's part of SAP
