About GitHub Projects

GitHub Projects is the planning layer built into GitHub. A project is a spreadsheet-like table, board or roadmap that pulls in issues and pull requests from one or more repositories, plus draft items that do not belong to a repo yet. You can add custom fields such as priority, iteration, estimate or status, save filtered and grouped views for different teams, chart progress with insights, and automate updates with built-in workflows, GitHub Actions or the GraphQL API. Because it sits right next to the code, status changes as pull requests are opened and merged, and developers never have to leave GitHub. It is a natural choice for open-source projects and engineering teams already on GitHub that want something lighter than Jira. It is less suited to non-technical teams, has limited reporting and no time tracking or resource planning. Projects is included with GitHub accounts, including the free plan, and runs in the browser and GitHub Mobile.

Best for: Engineering and open-source teams that already work in GitHub.
