About Google Cloud SQL

Cloud SQL is Google Cloud's managed relational database service for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server. Google handles provisioning, patches, automated backups, replication and high-availability failover, and you connect with standard drivers or through the Cloud SQL connectors that handle authentication via IAM. It integrates closely with Cloud Run, App Engine, GKE and BigQuery, and underpins Firebase SQL Connect. Two editions are offered: Enterprise for general workloads and Enterprise Plus for higher performance, availability and longer backup retention. Pricing is pay-as-you-go by vCPU, memory and storage, with committed-use discounts, and new Google Cloud customers receive free credits to try it. It is a sensible default for teams already on Google Cloud. Like Amazon RDS, it requires understanding cloud networking and IAM, is costlier than lightweight Postgres hosts at small scale, and provides only the database, not an API or auth layer.

Best for: Teams on Google Cloud that need managed Postgres, MySQL or SQL Server.
