About Amazon DynamoDB

Amazon DynamoDB is a fully managed NoSQL database on AWS that stores key-value and document data and scales to very high request rates without servers to manage. It is serverless: tables scale automatically, and you pay either on-demand per read and write or with provisioned capacity, plus storage. Features include global tables for multi-region replication, point-in-time recovery, streams that trigger Lambda functions, transactions and time-to-live expiry. It is the default database for many serverless AWS architectures and sits underneath services such as AWS Amplify's data layer. The cost of that scale is a data model that must be designed around access patterns up front, with limited ad-hoc querying, which can feel unfamiliar after SQL. A free tier covers small workloads. It only runs inside AWS, so it suits teams committed to that cloud; for a general-purpose app backend with auth and APIs, a backend-as-a-service is usually easier.

Best for: AWS-based teams building serverless apps that need predictable performance at scale.
