About Hasura

Hasura connects to databases you already have, such as Postgres, and instantly generates a GraphQL API with fine-grained permissions, subscriptions for realtime data and event triggers that call webhooks when rows change. It is often used as the API layer of a backend rather than a full platform: you bring the database and auth provider, and Hasura handles the data access layer, which saves writing CRUD resolvers. The open-source v2 GraphQL Engine can be self-hosted with Docker. Hasura DDN, the newer version, focuses on a federated supergraph across many data sources, with a free tier and paid plans priced per active model. The company has also shifted attention towards PromptQL, an AI data agent product, which leaves some uncertainty about where the GraphQL products are heading. Hasura suits teams committed to GraphQL; those who prefer REST, or want auth and storage included, will find full backend platforms simpler.

Best for: Teams that want an instant, permissioned GraphQL API over databases they already run.

Pros and cons

What works

  • GraphQL API with subscriptions generated from your schema
  • Row- and column-level permission rules
  • Open-source engine you can self-host

Why people leave

  • Not a full backend: auth and storage come from elsewhere
  • Company focus has moved partly to AI products
  • DDN concepts add complexity for small projects
