About Nhost

Nhost is an open-source backend platform that combines a Postgres database with an instant GraphQL API powered by Hasura, plus authentication, file storage and serverless functions. You define tables and permissions, and the GraphQL API with subscriptions for realtime data is generated for you, which suits frontend teams that already work with GraphQL clients such as Apollo or urql. It positions itself as a Firebase alternative built on SQL. Nhost Cloud runs projects for you, and the whole stack can also be self-hosted using the open-source components and a CLI that runs everything locally. The free Starter plan allows a single project that pauses after a week of inactivity, the Pro plan charges a monthly fee that includes compute credits, and a Team plan adds compliance and support. The dashboard runs in the browser. It is a smaller company than Supabase, so expect fewer tutorials and integrations.

Best for: Frontend teams who want Postgres with an auto-generated GraphQL API and auth.

Pros and cons

What works

  • GraphQL API with subscriptions generated from your schema
  • Open source and runnable locally with the CLI
  • Postgres underneath, so data stays portable

Why people leave

  • Free plan is limited to one project that pauses when idle
  • Smaller community and fewer guides than Supabase
  • GraphQL-first approach is less natural if you prefer REST
