About Houdini
Houdini builds everything from networks of nodes, so every model, effect and animation is procedural and can be changed or regenerated at any time. That makes it the tool of choice for large-scale visual effects such as explosions, fluids, destruction, smoke and crowds in film and TV, and increasingly for procedural game environments, where Houdini Engine runs Houdini tools inside Unreal, Unity and Maya. It also includes modeling, rigging, animation, USD-based lighting in Solaris and the Karma renderer. The node approach is powerful but demands a technical mindset, so it is harder to learn than most 3D apps. SideFX offers Houdini FX and Core as commercial perpetual or rental licences, Houdini Indie for small studios earning under $100K a year, low-cost education licences and Houdini Apprentice, a free non-commercial version with watermarked renders. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Best for: VFX artists and technical artists building procedural effects and game tools.
