About Autodesk Maya

Maya is the long-standing standard for character animation and visual effects in film, television and games studios. It offers polygon and subdivision modeling, UV and shading tools, a deep rigging and animation toolset, Bifrost for procedural effects and simulation, nCloth and hair systems, and the Arnold renderer, and it is heavily scriptable with Python and MEL so studios can build custom pipelines around it. Recent releases add AI-assisted animation tools such as MotionMaker. Because so many studios use it, Maya skills are often a job requirement, but it is expensive, complex to learn, and overkill for hobby work. It is sold as a subscription, with monthly and yearly terms, pay-per-day Flex tokens, a cheaper Maya Indie licence for small earners in some countries, and free educational licences. A free trial is available. Maya runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Best for: Animators and VFX artists working in, or aiming for, studio pipelines.
