About LightWave 3D
LightWave 3D has a long history in television and film visual effects, and is remembered by many artists from its use on series and films in the 1990s and 2000s. It is split into two programs: Modeler for building geometry and Layout for animation, lighting and rendering with its own production renderer, plus tools for dynamics, instancing, volumetrics and a node-based shading system. After years of stagnation under NewTek, LightWave was taken over by LightWave Digital, which has resumed regular releases with yearly versions. It retains a loyal user base among freelancers and small studios who value its renderer and workflow, but its community, plug-in ecosystem and job market are now much smaller than Blender's or Maya's. LightWave is sold as a licence from its online store, with upgrades for existing users and education pricing. It runs on Windows and macOS.
Best for: Existing LightWave artists and small studios who like its modeler and renderer.
