About Microsoft BizTalk Server

BizTalk Server is Microsoft's long-running on-premises integration platform. It connects separate business systems through adapters, moves and transforms messages between them, and runs graphically designed processes called orchestrations. It also includes a business rules engine, business activity monitoring for non-technical staff, enterprise single sign-on, and accelerators for industry standards such as HL7, RosettaNet and SWIFT, which made it common in banking, healthcare and EDI-heavy supply chains. It runs on Windows Server with SQL Server, and development happens in Visual Studio on .NET. Licensing is per-core through Microsoft, in several editions. BizTalk Server 2020 is the current release; Microsoft's lifecycle page lists mainstream support to April 2028 and extended support to April 2030, and Microsoft points new integration work toward Azure Logic Apps, which can also connect to existing BizTalk installs.

Best for: Enterprises with existing on-premises BizTalk integrations and B2B/EDI flows to maintain.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Mature adapters and accelerators for HL7, RosettaNet and SWIFT
  • Runs entirely on your own servers
  • Includes a rules engine and business activity monitoring
  • Can bridge to Azure Logic Apps for hybrid setups

Why people leave

  • Windows Server and SQL Server only
  • Extended support ends in April 2030, so it's a platform to migrate off
  • Heavy to install and operate compared with cloud iPaaS tools
