About Azure Cosmos DB

Azure Cosmos DB is Microsoft's managed, globally distributed database service. Its native API is a NoSQL document store, and it also offers APIs compatible with MongoDB, Apache Cassandra, Gremlin graphs and Table storage, so existing apps can move over with fewer changes. Data can be replicated to any Azure region with configurable consistency levels, and it has built-in vector search for AI applications. You pay by request units, either provisioned (with autoscale) or serverless for spiky, low-traffic workloads, plus storage, and there is a free tier allowance for one account. It is a natural choice for teams building on Azure or with Microsoft tooling, and it integrates with Azure Functions, Microsoft Fabric and other services. The request unit model is notoriously hard to estimate, and costs can climb with global replication. It runs only on Azure and does not provide auth or file storage for end users.

Best for: Azure-based teams that need a globally replicated NoSQL or vector database.
