About Mopidy

Mopidy is an extensible music server written in Python. It runs in a terminal or in the background on a Linux computer, Raspberry Pi or Mac with audio output, plays music from local files and internet radio out of the box, and adds sources such as SoundCloud, YouTube, Jellyfin and more through extensions; Spotify support depends on a community extension that has had to be reworked as Spotify changed its APIs. It is an HTTP server by default and becomes an MPD server with the Mopidy-MPD extension, so anyone in the room can queue songs from a phone, tablet or computer using web or MPD clients. That makes it a popular base for DIY jukeboxes and smart speakers. It is free under the Apache 2.0 licence. Mopidy plays audio on the machine it runs on rather than streaming files to remote devices, so it is not a Plex-style server, and setup involves config files and choosing extensions.

Best for: Raspberry Pi tinkerers building a shared jukebox or DIY networked speaker.
