About Nutanix Cloud Platform
Nutanix sells a hyperconverged infrastructure platform that combines compute, storage and networking on standard x86 servers and manages them as one private cloud. Its core is Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure: the AOS distributed storage layer, the AHV hypervisor, which is included rather than licensed separately, and the Prism console for management, upgrades and monitoring. Around that sit add-ons for Kubernetes, file and object storage, database-as-a-service, disaster recovery and AI workloads, and the same stack can run on public clouds through Nutanix Cloud Clusters. Customers can run it on hardware from Nutanix partners such as Dell, HPE and Lenovo, and it can also run on VMware ESXi. It is sold as subscription licences through partners, typically to mid-size and large organisations; a free Community Edition lets people learn it on their own hardware. Since Broadcom's changes to VMware licensing, Nutanix is one of the most common platforms companies evaluate when moving off vSphere; smaller teams and homelabs often look at Proxmox VE instead.
Best for: IT teams replacing VMware or SAN-based setups with a single, supported private cloud stack.
Pros and cons
What works
- AHV hypervisor is included, with no separate virtualization licence
- Single Prism console for compute, storage and upgrades
- Runs on many server vendors and extends to public clouds
Why people leave
- Pricing is quote-based through partners and costly for small sites
- Community Edition is for learning and testing, not production
- Ties you to Nutanix's storage and management stack
