About XCP-ng
XCP-ng is an open source virtualisation platform built on the Xen hypervisor. It began as a community fork of Citrix XenServer and is now a Xen Project incubation project hosted by the Linux Foundation, with development backed by the French company Vates. You install it as a turnkey appliance ISO on bare metal servers, group hosts into pools and manage them through Xen Orchestra, a web UI that also handles live migration, rolling updates, VM backup and disaster recovery, with an API, CLI and Terraform and Packer providers for automation. Xen Orchestra includes tools to import VMs directly from VMware ESXi, which has made XCP-ng a common landing spot for teams leaving VMware. The software is free; Vates sells support and packaged editions of the stack. It covers virtualisation and VM operations rather than the multi-tenant self-service cloud APIs OpenStack provides.
Best for: Teams wanting free enterprise-grade VM hosting, especially those leaving VMware.
Pros and cons
What works
- Free and open source, Linux Foundation hosted
- Xen Orchestra web UI with built-in backup
- Direct VM import from VMware ESXi
- Commercial support available from Vates
Why people leave
- Xen ecosystem is smaller than KVM's
- Not a full self-service IaaS like OpenStack
- Some Xen Orchestra conveniences are tied to paid plans
