About Paperpal

Paperpal comes from Cactus Communications, the company behind the Editage editing service, and is built around academic manuscripts. It checks grammar and tone trained on scholarly edits, paraphrases and translates, finds and summarises research papers, generates citations in common styles, and runs a plagiarism check. A set of more than 30 pre-submission checks looks for issues that journals commonly reject papers for, such as missing declarations or inconsistent references. You can use it in its own web workspace, through a Microsoft Word add-in, and via browser extensions for Chrome and Edge that support Google Docs and Overleaf. There is a limited free tier and a paid subscription that removes most limits, and institutions can license it for whole departments. It overlaps heavily with Trinka. Paperpal is most valuable when a manuscript is close to submission; for early drafting or non-academic writing, general tools are a better fit.
