About Rapid7
Rapid7 is a security vendor best known for vulnerability management and as the company behind the Metasploit penetration testing framework. Its Command Platform brings together InsightVM vulnerability scanning, now packaged as Exposure Command with attack surface, cloud and application security, a cloud SIEM, threat intelligence and governance tools. Teams that prefer to keep scanning in house can still run Nexpose, its on-premises vulnerability scanner. Rapid7 also runs a large managed detection and response service with 24x7 monitoring and unlimited incident response, so customers can buy tools, services or both. It is aimed at mid-sized and large organisations, and pricing is quote-based, usually per asset or per employee depending on the product. Rapid7 covers a lot of ground, but the product lineup and package names change often, which can make it hard to tell exactly what you are buying.
Best for: Mid-sized and large teams wanting vulnerability management and MDR from one vendor.
Pros and cons
What works
- Cloud and on-premises vulnerability scanning options
- MDR service with unlimited incident response
- Owns Metasploit, the widely used pentest framework
- SIEM, exposure and app security on one platform
Why people leave
- Quote-only pricing
- Frequent product renames and repackaging make plans hard to compare
- Overkill for small teams that only need a scanner
