About Sharkey

Sharkey is a fork of Misskey that keeps its expressive features, such as custom emoji reactions, rich markup and customisable interface, while adding improvements requested by its community. Notably, it implements the Mastodon API, so you can use Mastodon apps with a Sharkey account, which plain Misskey doesn't allow, and edits to your posts federate to other servers. It also adds profile backgrounds, a music status via ListenBrainz and other interface and performance changes, while following upstream Misskey changes where possible. Like other ActivityPub software, Sharkey servers interact with Mastodon, Pixelfed, Akkoma and the rest of the fediverse. It is free and open source and can be self-hosted, and is maintained by a small volunteer team. Sharkey is mainly relevant if you are choosing which fediverse server to join or run; its instances are fewer and smaller than Mastodon's.

Best for: Fediverse users who like Misskey but want to use Mastodon apps.
