About TheBrain

TheBrain is a long-running visual knowledge management app. Instead of a single tree, every idea (a "thought") can link to parents, children and sideways to any other thought, and the view rearranges around whatever you select, so very large collections of notes, files, web links and people stay navigable. Many users keep tens of thousands of thoughts in one brain over years. Each thought can hold notes, attachments and links, and search brings back the surrounding context. Version 15 adds Cerebro, an AI assistant that works across the whole brain, and a rebuilt cross-platform app. The desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux is now free with every feature and no account required; paid plans add cloud sync to iOS, Android and the web, expanded AI and collaboration. It is powerful for long-term knowledge work but feels different from classic mind mapping, and takes time to learn.

Best for: Researchers and knowledge workers building a large, linked map of ideas over years.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Scales to very large knowledge bases
  • Local storage or cloud sync

Why people leave

  • Unusual interface takes time to learn
  • Sync and AI extras need a paid plan
  • Not ideal for quick, presentable mind maps
