About ThredUp
ThredUp is an online thrift and consignment store for secondhand women's and kids' clothing, shoes and accessories. Unlike peer-to-peer apps, it works as a managed marketplace: sellers order a Clean Out Kit, fill it with clothes and send it back with a prepaid label, and ThredUp inspects, photographs, prices and lists the items, paying sellers a share once they sell. Buyers shop a huge, constantly changing catalogue of inspected items at well below original retail price, through the website or iPhone and Android apps. ThredUp also runs resale programmes for brands and retailers. Buying is free apart from the price of items and shipping, and sellers pay through the cut ThredUp keeps and optional kit fees. The trade-offs: sellers have little control over pricing and often earn very little per item, items it won't accept may not come back for free, and the service is focused on the US.
Best for: US shoppers who want cheap inspected secondhand clothes, or sellers who want zero listing work.
