About Tiger Data

Tiger Data is the company formerly called Timescale, and Tiger Cloud is its managed Postgres service built on the TimescaleDB extension. It is designed for workloads with large volumes of time-stamped data, such as IoT telemetry, metrics, financial ticks and event logs, where hypertables, compression and continuous aggregates let ordinary Postgres handle analytical queries far faster and store data more cheaply. Because it is still Postgres, you keep SQL, standard drivers and extensions like pgvector. Tiger Cloud runs on AWS and Azure with hourly billing for compute and storage, and plans step up from Performance to Scale and Enterprise, with a 30-day free trial. TimescaleDB itself remains available to self-host, with core features under Apache 2.0 and others under the Timescale licence, and there is a self-managed enterprise edition. It is a database rather than a full backend, and its special features matter mainly if your data is time-series heavy.

Best for: Teams storing and querying large time-series or event datasets in Postgres.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Fast time-series queries and strong compression on plain Postgres
  • Self-hostable TimescaleDB extension
  • Hourly billing with a 30-day trial

Why people leave

  • No permanent free cloud tier
  • Some features use a source-available licence rather than open source
  • Extra value is limited for non-time-series apps
