About Turso
Turso is a managed database service built on libSQL, an open-source fork of SQLite, and on Turso Database, a newer SQLite-compatible rewrite in Rust. Because each database is as lightweight as a file, Turso makes it practical to create thousands of databases, for example one per user or per tenant, and to keep embedded replicas inside your app or on the edge for fast local reads. It suits apps that like SQLite's simplicity but need a hosted, replicated service with an HTTP API and SDKs for TypeScript, Rust, Go, Python and more. The free plan covers small projects without a credit card, and paid plans are fixed monthly prices with included storage and row reads, plus overage rates. It is a database rather than a full backend, so auth and storage come from elsewhere. The open-source engines are MIT-licensed, while the Turso Cloud service itself is proprietary.
Best for: Developers who want hosted SQLite, or one database per user or tenant.
Pros and cons
What works
- Cheap to create very large numbers of small databases
- Embedded replicas for fast local reads
- Low-priced entry plan above the free tier
Why people leave
- SQLite semantics differ from Postgres, which some tools expect
- Database only, without auth or storage
- Newer Rust engine is still maturing
