About REST Client for VS Code

REST Client is a long-standing, open-source extension for Visual Studio Code by Huachao Mao that lets you send HTTP requests from a plain text file. You type a request, such as a method, URL, headers and body, into a .http or .rest file and click Send Request above it; the response opens in a side pane. It supports variables and environments, request chaining by referencing earlier responses, GraphQL queries, cURL import and export, code snippet generation, cookies and common authentication schemes. Because requests are just text files, they sit in your repository and are easy to review and share. It is free under the MIT licence and has been installed by millions of VS Code users. The trade-offs are that there are no test assertions or collection runner, development has slowed in recent years, and it only works in VS Code. It suits developers who want lightweight, versioned requests next to their code without another app.
