About WordCraft

WordCraft is a free, open-source word processor written from scratch in Rust by the ArtCraft team. It copies the familiar Microsoft Word workflow, with a ribbon, a styles gallery, tables, track changes, comments, references and mail merge, and it reads and writes .docx files. It also opens and saves ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and plain text, imports legacy .doc files and exports PDF. It's a native GPU-drawn app rather than an Electron wrapper, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a WebAssembly build for the browser. A command-line tool converts and inspects documents, and spelling and grammar checks work offline. The project is upfront that it's still in alpha: round-tripping complex .docx files, pagination accuracy and native printing are listed as unfinished. It suits people who want a light, open Word replacement for everyday writing and are fine with early-stage software.

Best for: People wanting a free, native Word-like editor who can live with alpha-stage rough edges..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Familiar ribbon layout with track changes, comments and mail merge
  • Reads and writes .docx and several other formats, with PDF export
  • Native app on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a browser build
  • Free and open source, with spelling and grammar working offline

Why people leave

  • Still alpha; the project lists .docx round-trip and pagination fidelity as unfinished
  • No native printing yet, according to its roadmap
  • Word processor only, with no spreadsheet or slides app alongside it
