About Google Sheets

Google Sheets is Google's browser-based spreadsheet. It handles the everyday spreadsheet jobs well: formulas, pivot tables, charts, filters, conditional formatting and data validation, plus functions that pull in live data such as GOOGLEFINANCE and IMPORTRANGE between sheets. Because it is online, many people can work in the same sheet at once, comment on cells and see each other's changes immediately, and Apps Script lets you automate tasks or connect other services. It opens and edits Excel files directly. It is free with a Google account and included in Google Workspace for businesses, where Gemini can help build formulas and summaries. It runs in the browser and on iOS and Android, with offline editing in Chrome or Edge. Large datasets are its weak spot: performance drops well before Excel's limits, and advanced features like Power Query-style data shaping or VBA macros have no direct equivalent.

Best for: Teams sharing trackers, budgets and lists that several people update.
