The short answer

Amazon EC2 suits teams that need a huge range of instance types, many regions and the rest of AWS alongside their servers. DigitalOcean Droplets suit developers who want a simple, well-documented Linux VPS with flat monthly pricing and included transfer. The biggest difference is complexity: EC2 bills many things separately and rewards expertise, while Droplets trade breadth for predictable bills and an easy control panel.

Amazon EC2 or DigitalOcean Droplets: our take

EC2 offers a very long list of instance types, from tiny burstable machines to large GPU, Arm and memory-heavy servers, in every AWS region, with storage, load balancing and auto scaling as separate services you assemble. Droplets are DigitalOcean's virtual machines: pick a Linux distribution or one-click app, a size and a data centre, and get a server with SSH access in about a minute. Plans run from small shared-CPU machines to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, with backups, snapshots, block storage, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes in the same control panel and API.

Pricing is where they feel most different. EC2 bills per second On-Demand, with Savings Plans up to 72% off and Spot Instances up to 90% off for interruptible capacity, but data transfer, storage and IP addresses are billed separately, which makes costs hard to predict. Droplets start at $4 per month, include outbound transfer from 500 GiB/month, cap hourly billing at a monthly price and do not charge for inbound bandwidth. Backups add 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet cost.

EC2's strengths are scale, hardware choice and being next to S3, RDS and IAM. DigitalOcean is known for clear documentation and a tidy dashboard, but it has fewer regions than AWS, centres on Linux images, and can cost more per core and RAM than budget European hosts.

Pick Droplets for side projects, small production apps and teams that want a server running quickly with a bill they can predict. Pick EC2 if you need GPUs or other specialised hardware, many regions, large-scale discounts through Spot or Savings Plans, or tight integration with other AWS services.

Which should you pick?

Choose Amazon EC2 if…

  • Teams that need many instance types, regions or deep AWS integration rather than a simple VPS.
  • Huge choice of instance types, including GPUs and Arm
  • Per-second billing on common operating systems

Choose DigitalOcean Droplets if…

  • Developers who want a simple, well-documented VPS with predictable monthly pricing.
  • You need Linux, which Amazon EC2 doesn't list
  • Clear flat pricing with included transfer
  • Easy control panel and API

About each app

What is Amazon EC2?

Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is the core virtual server service of Amazon Web Services. You pick an instance type from a very long list, from tiny burstable machines to large GPU and memory-heavy servers, choose an operating system image, and run it in any AWS region. Networking, block storage (EBS), load balancers and auto scaling are separate services you combine around it. Billing is flexible: On-Demand instances are charged per second with no commitment, Savings Plans cut the price in exchange for a one- or three-year commitment, and Spot Instances sell spare capacity at a deep discount but can be reclaimed. A free tier lets new accounts try small instances. EC2 suits teams that need scale, specific hardware or the rest of AWS next to their servers. For a single simple VPS it is more work and harder to price than Lightsail or DigitalOcean, since bandwidth, storage and IP addresses are billed separately.

What is DigitalOcean Droplets?

Droplets are DigitalOcean's virtual machines, aimed at developers and small teams who want a cloud server without the complexity of the big hyperscalers. You pick a Linux distribution or a one-click app image, a size and a data centre, and get a server with SSH access in about a minute. Plans run from a small shared-CPU machine for a few dollars a month up to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, each with a set amount of outbound transfer included and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. Inbound traffic is free. Add-ons include automatic backups, snapshots, block storage volumes, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes from the same control panel and API. Data centres span North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore. DigitalOcean is known for clear documentation and a tidy dashboard; compared with providers such as Hetzner or OVHcloud it can cost more for the same hardware, and it offers fewer regions than AWS.
