The short answer

Amazon Lightsail suits people who want a fixed-price VPS that can later connect to the rest of AWS, and it offers Windows servers. DigitalOcean Droplets suit developers who want a simple Linux server with a tidy dashboard, clear docs and a slightly lower starting price. The biggest difference is the ecosystem around the server: AWS's huge platform versus DigitalOcean's smaller, simpler one.

Amazon Lightsail or DigitalOcean Droplets: our take

Both sell virtual servers as predictable monthly bundles of CPU, memory, SSD storage and included transfer, instead of the many separate meters of a full cloud. Lightsail starts at $5 USD/month with IPv4, and every plan includes a static IP, DNS management and browser SSH. Droplets start at $4 per month, with outbound transfer from 500 GiB/month and free inbound traffic, billed hourly up to a monthly cap.

The operating systems differ. Lightsail offers Linux and Windows images, with Windows plans from $9.50 USD/month, plus ready-made apps such as WordPress. Droplets are Linux only, with one-click app images and a range of shared, dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types. Around the servers, both offer managed databases, load balancers and block storage; Lightsail adds object storage, a CDN and container services at flat prices, while DigitalOcean adds managed Kubernetes, snapshots and backups. DigitalOcean backups cost 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet price.

The bigger picture matters most. Lightsail runs on AWS, so it can connect to other AWS services or move to EC2 as a project grows, and new customers can try it under the AWS Free Tier. The cost is an AWS account and billing setup that can feel heavy for one small server, smaller transfer allowances in some Asian regions, and lower specs for the price than budget hosts. DigitalOcean is known for clear tutorials and an easy control panel and API, with data centres in North America, Europe and Asia including Bangalore, but it has fewer regions than AWS and costs more per core and RAM than budget European hosts.

Pick Lightsail for a Windows server, or if you expect to grow into AWS. Pick Droplets for a straightforward Linux box with good documentation and a simpler account to manage.

About each app

What is Amazon Lightsail?

Amazon Lightsail is the simple end of AWS: virtual private servers sold as fixed monthly bundles of memory, vCPUs, SSD storage and data transfer, instead of EC2's many separate meters. You choose a Linux or Windows image or a ready-made app such as WordPress, pick a bundle, and manage it from a console that hides most of AWS's complexity, with a static IP, DNS management and browser SSH included. Alongside servers it offers managed databases, load balancers, block storage, object storage, a CDN and container services at similar flat prices. New customers can try it under the AWS Free Tier. Because it runs on AWS, you can later connect it to other AWS services or move workloads to EC2. Trade-offs include smaller transfer allowances in some Asian regions, IPv4 costing more than IPv6-only bundles, and an AWS account and billing setup that can feel heavy for a single small server.

What is DigitalOcean Droplets?

Droplets are DigitalOcean's virtual machines, aimed at developers and small teams who want a cloud server without the complexity of the big hyperscalers. You pick a Linux distribution or a one-click app image, a size and a data centre, and get a server with SSH access in about a minute. Plans run from a small shared-CPU machine for a few dollars a month up to dedicated-CPU, memory-optimised and storage-optimised types, each with a set amount of outbound transfer included and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. Inbound traffic is free. Add-ons include automatic backups, snapshots, block storage volumes, load balancers, managed databases and Kubernetes from the same control panel and API. Data centres span North America, Europe and Asia, including Bangalore. DigitalOcean is known for clear documentation and a tidy dashboard; compared with providers such as Hetzner or OVHcloud it can cost more for the same hardware, and it offers fewer regions than AWS.
