The short answer

Pick ChatGPT if you want the widest feature set in one app, including voice, image generation, custom GPTs and an agent for longer tasks. Pick Claude if most of your work is reading long documents, writing prose or coding. The biggest difference is breadth versus focus: ChatGPT does more kinds of things, while Claude is the one many writers and developers prefer for sustained, text-heavy work.

ChatGPT or Claude: our take

ChatGPT tries to be an all-purpose assistant. Beyond chat it handles web search, file and data analysis, image generation, voice conversations and agent-style tasks, and a large ecosystem of custom GPTs and apps built on OpenAI's Apps SDK extends it further. Claude covers search, file creation, Artifacts, connectors to other apps and memory across chats, but it has fewer consumer media extras; it does not generate video, for example. Where Claude tends to stand out is long documents and large codebases, and many people like its natural writing tone.

Pricing is close at the common tier. ChatGPT has a free plan, a Go plan at $8/month, Plus at $20/month and Pro plans at $100, $200 or $500/month; Business is $20 per user/month. Claude has a free plan, Pro at $20 monthly or $17/month billed annually, Max from $100/month, and Team at $20 per seat/month billed annually. Both include a coding agent on paid plans: Codex with ChatGPT, Claude Code with Claude. A common complaint about Claude is hitting usage limits on heavy days, which is what the Max plans are for; ChatGPT's plans and limits change often.

Both run on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and both process conversations on the vendor's servers. With ChatGPT, personal chats can be used for model training unless you opt out, so check the data settings in whichever you choose.

For general use, households and people who want images, voice and plug-ins in one place, ChatGPT is the safer default. For writers, analysts and developers who spend their day in long documents or code, Claude is often the better fit. Since both have free plans, trying the same real task in each is the quickest way to decide.

About each app

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is the assistant that made chat-based AI mainstream, and it is still the default many people compare everything else against. It handles everyday questions, writing and editing, file and data analysis, web search, image generation, voice conversations and longer agent-style tasks, and it now bundles OpenAI's Codex coding agent into the same subscription. A large ecosystem of custom GPTs and third-party apps built with OpenAI's Apps SDK extends what it can do inside a conversation. The trade-offs are the usual ones for a market leader: the best models and highest limits sit behind paid plans, usage caps change often, and conversations are processed on OpenAI's servers, with model training on by default for personal accounts unless you opt out. Pricing is tiered, from a free plan through low-cost and standard monthly plans to several high-usage Pro tiers, plus per-seat Business and Enterprise plans. It runs on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

What is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic's chat assistant and one of the main alternatives to ChatGPT. It is popular for reading and summarising long documents, drafting and editing prose with a natural tone, analysing data and writing code, and it can search the web, create files and Artifacts, connect to apps through connectors, and remember context across chats. Paid plans add Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, along with Cowork for longer tasks and a Chrome extension. Compared with ChatGPT it has fewer consumer extras such as video generation, and usage limits on heavy workloads are a common complaint, which is why the Max plans exist. Anthropic is a public benefit corporation and emphasises safety research. Pricing runs from a free plan through Pro and two Max tiers to per-seat Team and Enterprise plans. Claude runs on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with Linux support for Claude Code.
