About Lumo

Lumo is the AI assistant from Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN. Its pitch is privacy: conversations are saved with zero-access encryption so only you can read them, Proton says it keeps no logs of your chats and never uses them to train AI models, and Lumo's code is open source so those claims can be checked. The company is built and based in Europe. It covers everyday chat, web search, file uploads and image generation, and links with Proton Drive. It suits people who want AI help without handing their conversations to an advertising or AI company. The trade-off is capability: the open models it uses trail the frontier models in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini on hard reasoning and coding, and it has fewer integrations. There is a free plan with limits, and Lumo Plus adds unlimited chats, more chat history and more usage of its strongest model. It runs on the web, iOS and Android.

Best for: Privacy-focused people, especially existing Proton users, who want an encrypted assistant.
