About Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is the consumer AI assistant from Microsoft, available as a standalone app and woven into Windows, Edge, Bing and the Microsoft 365 apps. For most people the appeal is convenience: it comes preinstalled on new Windows 11 PCs, answers to a keyboard shortcut or a wake word, and with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription it can work inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on your own files. It also does image creation, voice chat and visual help using your screen or camera. The trade-off is that its best features are tied to Microsoft 365 subscriptions, the product line and branding are confusing (consumer Copilot, Copilot Chat for work and Microsoft 365 Copilot are different things), and it offers fewer power-user controls than ChatGPT or Claude. Basic Copilot is free with a Microsoft account; higher usage comes through Microsoft 365 plans. It runs on Windows, macOS, the web, iOS and Android.

Best for: Windows and Microsoft 365 users who want AI inside the apps they already use.
